Персей Кановы – прекрасный юноша, победивший Медузу. Скульптор изобразил его победителем, демонстрирующим свой трофей – голову чудовища. Неверное отражение в пруду сбивает зрителя с толку. Но в этом – намек на то, как герой добился своей победы. Персей пользовался зеркальным щитом, чтобы сокрушить Медузу, взгляд которой превращал каждого в изваяние, вроде того, что создал Канова.
Canova's Perseus is a beautiful young man who defeated Medusa. The sculptor depicted him as a victor showing his trophy – the monster's head. The wrong reflection in the pond confuses the viewer. But this is a hint at how the hero achieved his victory. Perseus used the mirror shield to crush Medusa, whose gaze turned everyone into a statue like the one created by Canova.
